Did you know that one in four people living in Western North Carolina are unsure of where their next meal is coming from? I was shocked when I heard this statistic but excited to learn of F.A.R.M. Café, now open on King Street in Boone. The not for profit restaurant is part of a national movement called One World Everybody Eats. So far, there are 20 other restaurants operating under this One World Everybody Eats mission.
When I stopped in a few weeks ago, I was greeted by smiling volunteers who must have read my confused face and were eager to explain the concept. I was told that food, which smelled delicious, comes solely from local farmers. Fennel roasted pork with mango chutney, roasted beets with citrus zest, black eye pea salad, miso mushroom soup, and banana pudding for desert? Sure doesn’t sound to me like your average buffet! At F.A.R.M. the emphasis is on family friendly, nutritious food that everyone can enjoy.
The restaurant, “Feed All Regardless of Means” accepts multiple forms of payment to ensure that no one is turned away. The F.A.R.M. team will let you pay what you can, make a donation, or volunteer an hour of your time in exchange for the meal. Volunteers are asked to help out in various ways: prep food, bus tables, wash dishes, greet patrons, and assist local farmers.
The restaurant, which opened its doors in April, is located inside Boone Drug Downtown (617 W. King Street).
