The views are ancient. The experiences are all brand new. To have a great time at Grandfather Mountain, simply step out of your car. Or, if you choose, you can scale ladders and edge along cliffs as you hike to remote peaks.
That’s the magic of Grandfather Mountain. With convenient modern amenities, including handicapped accessibility, you’ll find excitement that matches every comfort level. Adventures come in all sizes up here, so everyone can have the perfect mountain experience.
Open year-round, weather permitting, Grandfather Mountain is not only a scenic travel destination, but also a globally recognized nature preserve and the highest peak in the Blue Ridge mountains (elevation 5,946 feet).
High on Grandfather Mountain, the possibilities are as endless as the views. The lofty altitude gives guests the exhilarating sense of being above the surrounding mountains, while the Mile High Swinging Bridge makes adventurers of all who traverse it.
Wildlife habitats offer guests up-close-and-personal views of black bears, river otters, cougars, deer and bald eagles. Educational programs, offered regularly by the mountain’s naturalists, give guests a glimpse into the lives of these indigenous creatures and their mountain home.
The Nature Museum features premier exhibits on the natural history of the region, and an adjoining auditorium showcases nature films made on the mountain. The museum is also home to a gift shop and restaurant. Alternately, folks can bring a picnic to enjoy at one of 100-plus picnic areas, complete with tables and grills. Plus, more than 12 miles of regularly maintained hiking trails, which range from easy to strenuous, offer ample opportunity to walk off one’s lunch.
Grandfather Mountain is, perhaps, most famous for its Mile High Swinging Bridge, a 228-foot suspension bridge spans an 80-foot chasm at more than one mile in elevation. The recently renovated Top Shop provides not only a gift shop and restroom facilities, but also elevator access to the bridge, making the span accessible to people with disabilities.
Anyone who visits Grandfather Mountain discovers a place that inspires awe through natural wonders. You’ll never experience the same mountain twice: today, you might come face-to-face with an owl, another day you may see rare wildflowers in bloom. There’s nowhere else on Earth that you can enjoy such a variety of mountain life in one amazing place.
